Canadian Moms Guide to Saving Money on Diapers

09/23/2012

Tackling that big box of diapers into the cart every couple of weeks can really drain the grocery budget. Making a few changes to the way you shop can help to reduce the money you are spending on diapers and get your tally way below the average $3,000 that a parent is going to spend on diapers and training pants until the kid finally decides that they are going to use the toilet.

So, what are the basics of buying diapers and how can you save?

Know Your Prices

Stop comparing the prices of boxes and bags of diapers. A good price for diapers isn’t going to depend on the price of the entire box alone – you are going to need to consider the amount of diapers in the box. That’s right.  Rather than depending on the cost of the box, find out the cost per diaper.

Average price $0.15-$0.17/diaper

Good price $0.12-$0.15/diaper

Stock Up price $0.10-$0.12/diaper

Keep in mind that the larger the size of the diapers – the higher the price. For diapers that are up there in size, you might have to add a few cents per diaper.

Know When to Buy

There are some great times of the year to stock up on diapers. One of those times is right now. In August/September, stores like Wal-Mart are advertising Anniversary prices – and other stores like Superstore are going to match those prices to stay in the competition.  Monitoring the prices of diapers from week to week to see if a sale is really a sale to see when you should buy more than one box. Keep in mind that sales tend to cycle every three to six months, so if you find a fantastic sale or deal on diapers you might want to stock up.

Use Coupons

You can use coupons on diapers that are on sale at stores like Superstore, Wal-Mart and Shoppers Drug Mart. Stores like London Drugs and Save on Foods take this a step further, allowing you to use more than one coupon (as long as they are different coupons) for Huggies diapers, up to the value of the product.

You can find Huggies coupons in the Smart Source Newspaper insert that comes out from time to time – also through www.smartsource.ca and released through the Huggies Canada Facebook page from time to time.

Looking for Pampers coupons? You can find those online at www.brandsaver.ca – as well as through the Brandsaver coupons newspaper inserts available every three months.

Use Rewards Programs

Collect the points and codes that are inside the boxes and bags of diapers and wipes that are purchased. Using these points, you can enter them online and redeem for free coupons for diapers and wipes, but also for toys and other items that are going to help cover Christmas and birthday presents.

Shoppers Drug Mart might be a bit of an expensive place to get diapers – but their points system turns that idea on its head. Coupons are released through the Very Important Baby program (via the optimum card promotion) that can give you bonuses like 3,000 points when you buy a bag of Huggies. When Huggies are on sale for $8.99-$9.99, you can use a coupon mailed out from the company and a coupon for the extra points from Shoppers Drug Mart.  So, you end up paying $6.99 (if you have the common $2 off coupons) and earning 3,000 points. What’s so great about that? A few times a year, Shoppers Drug Mart has bonus redemption days, where the points are worth more to redeem. On those days, those 3,000 points are worth $8. Well, guess what? You just made $1 over the price of the diapers in points.

Daily Deal Websites

You might be wondering what Daily Deal websites have to do with buying diapers? Well, quite a bit. Websites like Teambuy and Wagjag have teamed up to offer customers deals like a box of Huggies and a $20 Well.ca gift card for $30. You can turn around and use the $20 Well.ca gift card to buy another box of diapers on sale, snagging yourself a great deal.

Plus, I love the deals available through Well.ca for diapers. You can often find the largest boxes on sale for $39-$42. First time orders can use the coupon code frugalmama to save an extra $10 off of this price – and taking advantage of the free shipping with no minimum. For smaller sized diapers, this can be a fantastic way to get cheap diapers.

Shop the Clearance Rack

One of my last tips to save while saving money shopping for diapers is to shop the clearance rack.  Huggies, Pampers and store brand diapers are often on the clearance rack when there are small packaging changes or when the store plans are being converted.  Shoppers Drug Mart is quite famous for this. Find the clearance rack at your local Shoppers Drug Mart and keep your eye on it. The jumbo sizes of diapers are often on sale for $5 and under – and you can use your regular coupons for these diapers too, even though they are on clearance.

Shopping for diapers doesn’t have to break the bank. Using these tips, you might just want to reconsider the large box of diapers you are picking up with your Safeway trip each week. It just might be a few bucks worth saving.

Great tips for this first time mom! For the well.ca discount code, I tried it on one of the baby club diaper packs but it was not accepted. Most of the diapers are part of the club…just wondering if the code is supposed to work on all diapers?
