Getting Healthy with Trainsmart Wellness Part 1 – The Assessment

This could also aptly be named The Day I Finally Got my Sh*t Together!

So here I am… exactly 30 lbs heavier than I was 3 months ago. Yep, you read that right. I gained 30 lbs in 3 effin’ months. How? Stress. Pure head-spinning unadulterated stress. I did a really good job of losing the postpartum weight with Baby Bear and even through starting Mommy Connections North Peel, I managed to keep it all together. But then, summer hit and everything seemed to go downhill… my stress levels peaked and my anxiety was at an all-time high. Cue the stress eating. I ate any and everything I could get my hands on, including foods I haven’t touched in years. I ate and ate past the point of fullness until my body was uncomfortable. Why? Because it’s easier to be uncomfortable because you’ve eaten too much than to be uncomfortable because you’re swimming in anxiety.

I found Trainsmart Wellness the way I find anything these days… scrolling Instagram for health and wellness content here in Brampton. I wasn’t exactly sure what they had to offer but I followed them and soon Jacob reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in coming in for an assessment. The timing could not have been more perfect.

Trainsmart Wellness is Brampton’s first & only kinesiology based clinic. The bridge between fitness & health, using movement & education to help individuals live a healthier life. What does that mean? A kinesiologist can provide in depth and scientific approach to personal training by giving you the tools and techniques that allow your body to move better and more efficient. Jacob really focuses on moving your body correctly so that you’re not injuring yourself in the process.

On the day of my assessment, I went in and started with a quick consultation where Jacob asked me some questions pertaining to my lifestyle and goals. We chatted about things that I was already doing and how I could start to make the transition back to my normal healthy lifestyle. We talked about my past as an athlete and that informed him about how he would approach future training sessions. He took my resting heart rate and also my blood pressure.

I got weighed (JOY) and measured and then Jacob hooked me up to a machine that measures body fat. He put all the little pads on my fingers and toes and then in 1 second pressed a button that allowed an electromagnetic current to get my body composition. The whole thing was really cool. I also did a grip strength test where I learned that I have no strength in my left hand – lol.

We then went over some exercises to see if I had correct form when performing any of the standard movement patterns typically found in a workout. It was good to know where my form was good and areas where my body seemed to be moving wonky. Jacob identified areas of strength and areas for improvement which informed the way he designed my subsequent training session. I also got to do a fun (read: killer) cardio test to assess my cardiovascular strength.

Ya so I failed that hardcore – no surprise. My cardiovascular strength is currently non-existent. The thing to keep in mind, is that Jacob uses all of these assessment pieces as a baseline. They’re not meant to shame you into exercise. Once you know where you started, it’s easier to keep track of progress since progress isn’t only measured on the scale.

Afterward we sat down and he thoroughly reviewed my numbers and went over a plan to achieve my goals which included my first training session the following week. Keep your eyes peeled to find out how that went down! I’m really glad I went in to see Jacob. I honestly knew that my body wasn’t in a healthy place anymore but I really felt like I still had things under control. It was a huge eye opener to visit Trainsmart Wellness and get started on my new wellness journey.

P.s. Jacob is super awesome and really friendly. He even checks in on me to see how I’m doing and if I’m keeping up with my food and fitness.
