Getting Healthy with Trainsmart Wellness Part 2 – The Training Session

New Years resolutions are-a-comin’ but before you make your annual goal to lose x amount of weight, let’s try and shift our focus to getting healthy. As moms, we want to make sure we take the very best care of ourselves so we can mom the hell out of any day. Those cuddly babies will soon because busy toddlers and active pre-schoolers and you’ll want to be able to keep up with them. Truthfully, I don’t work out to lose weight (I can do that in the kitchen alone). I am active for my mental health, and the physical benefits of exercise.

When I last left you I had completed my assessment with Jacob at Trainsmart Wellness. It was a lot of fun to see my baseline results as well my strengths and weaknesses. I learned that cardiovascularly, I had a lot of work to do but that I had great technique for weight lifting (which is super important).

We started my training session with a 5-minute warm up on an apparatus of my choosing. I went with the rower, since it’s usually my favourite. I didn’t realize how leisurely I normally go on the rower until Jacob asked me to pick up the pace. The great thing about having a trainer is that they push you to test your abilities and show you how much strength you actually have. Following my warm up we did intervals that included some cardio on the spin bike followed by some strength training exercises. I liked the way the activities were varied so that I didn’t get bored. I’m not going to lie, I definitely struggled through this workout but Jacob did a great job at pacing me and letting me take breaks when I needed. Because Jacob’s background is in the science and mechanics of exercise vs. just how to lose or gain weight, he really focuses on the functionality of your body – is your body working at its optimal capacity? Are your muscles and joints reacting the way they should? Are you being safe? I love this approach because as many of you can attest, there are trainers that will throw you to the wolves and push you until both you and your body are defeated – that style of training doesn’t work for me.

I enjoyed my training session because I felt comfortable with Jacob and his method of training. I knew he had my body’s best intentions at heart and wasn’t simply trying to make me as sore as he could. Safety is so important when working out, especially as a mom because the last thing you want to be is out of commission with a little one in tow.

If you are considering starting an exercise plan in the new year (even an at-home workout), consider visiting Jacob first at Trainsmart Wellness so that he can make sure your movements are conducive to a safe and healthy workout. You might think your squats, lunges, deadlifts, and overhead presses are done correctly but one minor posture or alignment change could be the difference between an effective workout and an injured mama.

The great thing about choosing a Kinesiologist is that Kinesiology is a regulated health profession. Services are tax deductible and in some cases, coverage is available from your extended health care plan.
