Permission to Say “Mom” First – Mommy Blogger

07/13/2018

I’m a 24-year-old wife and new mom to our daughter “Baby G”, as I refer to her in my blogs.  She is the new adventure in our marriage and the smile bringer to our everyday.  She is the main character in my stories lately, as she teaches me something new every day.  I love writing about her and the everyday happenings of mommy life, so I’m extremely excited to join this blogging group!

Permission to Say “Mom” First

A little while ago, Hillary Clinton was criticized for having listed “Wife” and “Mom” on various social media outlets first, before “Former First Lady”, or any of her other titles.  Political leanings aside, this story caught my attention.

The fact that this even became a story, shows the distorted view a large part of society holds about moms, about kids, and about what a woman’s life really consists of.  She was criticized for listing being a mom before other prestigious accomplishments in her life, as if it was an insult to those other things to place being a mom before them.  This slice of societal attitude hit me, hearing that being a mom isn’t something to be proud of, but rather, that motherhood was a sort of plague that I had been hit with, blemishing all other aspects of my life.  I jokingly considered listing “had chicken pox as a child” on my social media outlets next to being a mom, and before any other involvements.  This view of being a mom isn’t sinister though, it simply stems from a culture of people who really just don’t understand.

I, among other things, am a mom.  I am a teacher, wife, sister, business owner, friend, daughter, blogger…the list goes on.  Each involvement takes up time, brain-power, and physical work.  But none of them take away from being a mom.  See, no matter how many other things a mom is involved with; her heart has this amazing ability to be fully given to her children.  It’s like an override function that pushes children to the top of the heart.  Being a mom isn’t an * that takes away from anything else; being a mom is a hugely impressive feat.

To the mom who manages a full time job while being a kick butt mom and wife in the same 24 hours that everyone else has, to accomplish groceries, laundry, sports practice, music lessons, supper prep and that all-important stop on the way home for dog food.  You rock!  Go ahead and list mom first on your social media, it shows you’re awesome!  To the mom who puts her career on hold while staying home to take care of her kids, with a full understanding of how society dings women for taking time off from work.  You are great!  Being a mom is a full time job in itself, and a trying, no-coffee break, exhausting kind of job.  List mom as your job title on social media and be proud of it!  To all moms who have a list of titles too long to count, some recognized, others not, being a mom amongst everything else is a super-hero skill comparable to nothing else.  Say, “I’m a mom” loud and proud, and know that there’s a whole community of moms who recognize how impressive that really is.

I’m not sure if society’s view of motherhood will ever take a turn for the better, but I am sure that it doesn’t change the amazing job millions of moms wake up and perform each and every day.  I’ve come to learn, especially in Saskatoon, that there is an amazing group of moms supporting moms, in large part thanks to Mommy Connections.  Being able to join this culture and support other moms in a positive way is just another reason to love being a mom so darn much!
