How Prepared Are You for a Caesarean Section – Mommy Blogger

10/25/2018

30 year old female who is a wife and mum to a 3 year old son and expecting my second child. New to Saskatoon Canada 🇨🇦 trying out a new adventure. All the way from South Africa 🇿🇦 and new to blogging. Hoping my experience and stories enlightens other moms

When I was expecting my first child I just “knew” I would have a natural birth, there was no questioning it. I had a birth plan as suggested by a lot of parenting books and magazines, so I was pretty confident at how things might turn out for me on the Big Day.

I know people say be prepared for anything as things don’t always go according to plan, and just then at 30 weeks pregnant a curve ball swung my way. Doctor’s visits became more frequent and I was put on bed rest. Not that I really done any of that which might have made things worse as I always felt the need to keep busy. At my 32 week check up, unknown to me I was having contractions already. I felt them, but thought my stomach didn’t agree with what I ate so I just paced up and down in the living room. I said to myself I wasn’t going to be a first time nervous wreck mum and go to the hospital at the first discomfort I felt. When we arrived at my gynae appointment the doctor picked up on my contractions but that wasn’t all. She told me my amniotic fluid was reducing and no matter how much water I drank, it wouldn’t make the situation any better. I needed to go home and pack my bag and be admitted in hospital.

I still had a breakfast date planned that day mind you! But that didn’t happen as we quickly rushed off to get the bags (which was already in the car) and get back to the hospital. I was given meds to stop the contractions and cortisone injections to help the baby’s lungs develop quicker. I decided to repack my bag once we got home as I only packed for a short one night stay which I thought would be a vaginal birth. The doctor said she would try to keep me pregnant for as long as she could, but did not want to take any chances. So she scheduled a caesarean section two weeks later. She told me to be prepared in case my baby needed to go to the NICU depending on his weight and ability to breathe on his own as he was delivered at a premature age.

There goes my birth plan I thought to myself. I was not prepared for this, but as the days drew closer I couldn’t wait to meet my baby. Finally the Big Day Arrived 😁. I remember the nerves and excitement settling in. I was the first patient that morning to go into theater. The room felt cold and there were tons of bright lights around and surgical equipment. I was so thankful to the nurse who held my hand through it all. She explained every step of the procedure before it happened and all I could say was “please tell me when it’s over and my baby is here”. I didn’t want to know every detail. My husband sat behind me comforting me as I got sick from the anesthetic. When I heard my baby’s first cry as he was pulled out I smiled and so much joy overcame my heart. I caught a glimpse of him and couldn’t wait to get back to the ward to be with him.

Through it all my husband stayed with our little guy. After recovery he was all I could ask for. I felt like a super mom who brought this bundle of joy into the world, and not once did it cross my mind that he was a caesarean baby. I gave birth dammit! How he was born was irrelevant. I had a healthy 2.6kg baby that got to leave the hospital with me three days later. You forget about the pain and recovery process when you look over at the most beautiful gift you were blessed with. And that is all that should matter in the end.
