Swimsuit season. This term always elicits a panicked response in me, as my mind goes to the thought of swimsuit shopping. After a long winter the idea of stripping down to try on bathing suits under the store’s neon lights, carrying some winter weight, and having no tan to speak of is not on my list of favourite things to do. But this year, my first as a new mom, the term swimsuit season has managed to produce a panicked response again, but for different reasons. Instead of the aesthetic, superficial ones I am very honed in on sun safety for my baby’s fresh skin.
As a meteorologist and Television host on The Weather Network, I am a self-confessed weather nerd and not only do I always look at the forecast, but as we hit spring, I start to notice the UV index. I don’t need to give you a lecture about it, you know the drill, UV rays are dangerous and the main cause of skin cancer. Just know this, in the summer months the UV (Ultra Violet) index forecast trends on being in the ‘high’ range, and unprotected skin (and this of course varies based on skin type) can burn in approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
So while I can buy a just for fashion, not practical, uncomfortable bikini for myself I am going sensible for my baby. Then I was given a full body UPF50 swimsuit by January Baby. I checked to see if it met all my requirements. Does it have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 50? Does it have a zipper? No buttons please. Does it have long sleeves? Will it cover her little legs all the way to her ankle? Yes it does.
This brand January Baby checks off those boxes, and from a design perspective I love their colour block swimsuits. They look chic, but not too busy. I also love that these suits are full length in the sleeves and legs, and this is one of the biggest differences I see between this brand and other swimsuits out there. The longer length adds that extra coverage. Oh, also, their suits are UPF 50, which means it allows only 1/50 of the sun’s rays to penetrate the fabric, and is the highest rating available.
My little one simply has to wear this swimsuit and she will be protected, mother win! Now that swimsuit season is all taken care of for my baby, we have to find one for mommy’s post baby, in between sizes, body. Wish me luck!
